RESUMO:

Orfom® D8 is a low carbon-chain trithiocarbonate ((NaOOC)CH2SCSSNa) with anionic functional groups at both ends. It was tested as an organic depressant in the differential flotation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite in the presence of two types of xanthate collector. Results show that it depresses chalcopyrite while molybdenite remains floatable. A series of studies using FT-IR, cyclic voltammetry, XPS, zeta-potential measurements, and DFT molecular modelling have helped understand the mechanism involved. Successful trial runs at large plant facilities verify the results and show favorable economics compared to compared to NaSH, a traditional inorganic depressant. He gave this presentation at the 2020 SME Annual Meeting and subsequently nominated to be a Henry Krumb Lecture and subsequently awarded in 2021.

BIOSKETCH:

Dr. Courtney Young is a graduate of three premiere institutions obtaining his BS in Mineral Processing Engineering from Montana Tech in 1984, MS in Mining and Minerals Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1987, and his PhD in Metallurgical Engineering from The University of Utah in 1994. Courtney returned to Montana Tech in 1993 as their first-ever postdoc and became a professor two years later. As a faculty member, he served as Department Head (1998-2019) and was named the ASARCO Professor (1996-2005) and Lewis S. Prater Distinguished Professor (2006-Present). Dr. Young has advised student research so far for 120 undergraduates and 46 MS and PhD students mostly with funding from the mining industry.  Research topics have varied over the years in mineral processing and extractive metallurgy including applications thereof to recycling and remediation.  Courtney has been extremely active with SME as an officer, author, presenter, session organizer, and symposia chair.  He has published, edited and presented nearly 200 papers and books. He and his wife, Miriam of 33 years, have two daughters, Jessica and Jamie both of whom are alumni of Montana Tech.
